The Hallway

I wake up this morning
all soaking wet
'cause I had been dreaming
that you were dead
I heard the rain fall
so I'd stay in bed
thinking some more of the dream that I had
the last time I saw you
you waved me goodbye
I stood in the hallway
with tears in my eyes
I hope on your way there
before you arrive
you know that you've already taken a life
I lived my life in vain
there's nowhere I can stay
since I lost you
I prayed that the winter
would carry me through
but each day your picture
reminds me of you
you sent me a postcard
from where you're deployed
it read "I'll be home soon, my darling don't cry"
I woke up this morning

and when the phone rang
I was shaking bad
I ran down the hallway
for good news I'd pray
a voice said "I'm sorry your son died today"
