Goodnight Irene Songtext

Goodnight, Irene, it's 'bout time you should leave.
The doctor says it's time to go.
Off home to bed, chase the ghosts from your head
that only leave footprints in snow.

and I've turned my face to the blind side of grace
where the preacher has given me wings.
Tomorrow you'll rise, with the sun in your eyes,
long forgotten me.

And it seemed like years since we ran out of tears
and the Lord called me out to the trees.
The angels that came all were shouting my name
and wrestled me down to my knees.

The East Wind kept time, angels sang "Auld Lang Syne"
before lifting me up through the sky.
And when I came down, you called the ambulance round
and carried me off to sleep.
